Tara Abrina
PhD Student Google Scholar Tara is a marine economist and PhD student at James Cook University specializing in coral reef valuation and fisheries value chain research. On the weekends, she is a freediving and yoga instructor, teaching coastal communities to monitor their reefs on breath hold. She has a ten-year career in consultancies and professional outreach work on environmental policy, monitoring and evaluation, and citizen science. |
Alessia Costa
PhD Student Alessia is a marine conservation biologist and PhD candidate with 10 years of experience as a professional scuba diver. Her current research at JCU focuses on optimising the design process of marine protected areas to maximise ecological and socioeconomic outcomes. In addition to her research, Alessia is involved as a teaching support for students in modelling ecological dynamics and statistical analysis in ecological studies. |
Juan Silva
PhD Student Google Scholar Juan Silva is a sociologist from Universidad Católica de Chile, MSc in Environmental Science and Management from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and currently a PhD candidate at James Cook University, Australia. He is a member of the Latin American Fisheries Fellowship Network, and the Coastal Solutions Fellowship Program from the University of Cornell. His research interest focuses on exploring the role of environmental governance networks in shaping social and ecological outcomes, with an emphasis on bridging science, communities and policy makers. His current research at JCU aims to advance our understanding on the design of governance architectures that enhance social-ecological alignment in coastal wetlands, which are highly threatened biomes existing at the convergence of terrestrial, freshwater and marine realms. |
Dr. Robert Canto
Researcher Google Scholar Robert has conducted a wide range of coastal and marine science research, including studies on plankton distribution, ocean productivity, coral reef benthic cover dynamics, and mapping (habitat, risk assessment, suitability assessment, coastal carbon, ocean color, and sea surface temperature). He has a strong interest in research that generates spatially explicit knowledge and solutions through the use of spatial data, remote sensing technology, and geographic information systems. |
Adityo Setiawan
MPhil Student Google Scholar Adit has over 10 years of professional experience in marine conservation and fishery research in the Coral Triangle, particularly in Indonesia. He is passionate about implementing innovative solutions and promoting collaboration among researchers, practitioners, government organizations, and relevant stakeholders to enhance sustainable marine practices. His current research focuses on assessing the sustainability of coral reef fisheries in Indonesia. |

Dhruv Narayan
Master's Student Intern As a current master's student specialising in marine conservation and management, I possess a solid foundation in both the theoretical and practical aspects of driving impactful conservation initiatives aimed at preserving marine ecosystems. I am eager to contribute to research in the marine environment and related fields, leveraging my multidisciplinary analytical skills, which include statistical mining of big data, remote sensing, and ecological modelling. My goal is to apply these tools to enhance our understanding of ecological dynamics and support sustainable management practices. |
